Mission Objectives:
Send spacecraft to near-vicinity of Venus
Establish and maintain two way communication with spacecraft through out flight
Make field and particle measurements on the environment in interplanetary space and near Venus
Make infrared and microwave measurements to try to resolve character and temperature of Venus
Major Mission Constraints:
Must pass within 8,000 to 40,000 miles of Venus
Had to be launched between July and September 1962
Could only be launched 21 days after Mariner 1
Chances of impacting on Venus had to be less than 1 in 1,000
Must be positioned to enable constant communication with Earth
Solar panels must always be oriented towards the Sun
Must scan Venus at proper angles during the brief encounter
