The Impact of Space Exploration and Programs
Investigator: Rafic Bachnak
Texas A&M Corpus Christi
Space exploration has impacted our lives in a number of ways. Space-based research, for example, has yielded advances in communication systems, weather forecasting, computers, electronics, and medical instruments. The general public, however, is still not well educated about the benefits of space exploration and space based research programs. The goal of this project is to communicate the benefits of space exploration to K-12 educators and the general public. The project addresses several K-12 Education Program goals and includes the following activities: (1) Organizing presentations at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi by NASA guest speakers. These presentations will target K-12 educators but will be open to others, including the university community, students from the Corpus Christi Independent School District, schools in the surrounding areas, and the general public in Nueces County, (2) Organizing tours for K-12 educators in Corpus Christi and the surrounding cities to visit Johnson Space Center and tour several facilities, including research laboratories such as the International Space Station mockups. The tours will also include presentations by the education office at JSC, (3) Creating a project web site that will serve as a communication link with local constituents and the larger community, and (4) Producing a CD to disseminate the project results and help in sustaining the project.
