Design a Flying Car

The NASA Langley Research Center, Aerospace Vehicle Systems Technology Office, invites high school classrooms and/or student teams to submit their ideas for a practical flying car. The competition encourages all levels of high school students to engage in the process of submitting an entry. Inter-classroom teaming is encouraged, as is inter-school teaming. For example, a local school district may want to sponsor a team that represents the district science classes. A state junior academy of science may want to sponsor a team from among their student members. Traditional science fair competitions could be modified to use the flying car concept as a category. Winning entries from the local science fairs could be improved and submitted to the national NASA sponsored competition. For details visit the above referenced URL.


Mars Student Imaging Project

NASA and Arizona State University's Mars Education Program is offering students nationwide the opportunity to be involved in authentic Mars research by participating in the Mars Student Imaging Project (MSIP). Teams of students in the 5th through 12th grade will have the opportunity to work with scientists, mission planners and educators on the THEMIS team at ASU's Mars Space Flight Facility, to image a site on Mars using the THEMIS visible wavelength camera on board the Mars Odyssey spacecraft which is currently orbiting Mars every 2 hours. Toyota's Investment In Mathematics Excellence (TIME) Teacher Awards

Toyota's Investment In Mathematics Excellence (TIME) is granting awards to teachers of up to $10,000 for innovative projects that enhance mathematics education within a school. This grant is sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales, USA., Inc through its partnership with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and its Mathematics Education Trust Board. Any K-12 classroom teacher with 3 years experience teaching mathematics within the United States is eligibly to apply for this award. The deadline for applications is January 8, 2003. Internet Astronomy Course for Middle and High school students

Astronomy! Even the word conjures up wondrous images in your mind. Images of distant galaxies, maybe, or exploding stars, or comets, meteors, stars, constellations, telescopes, or maybe even your own memories of a night under a truly dark sky where the universe seemed to glow with "billions" of stars. Whatever image the word astronomy creates in your mind, the subject of astronomy has captured the interest and attention of virtually every human on the planet since humans were able to look up. What follows is a course on astronomy using the Internet. It is adaptable to most age and interest levels. Grants for Teachers Deadline, October 1, 2002

The Dirksen Congressional Center invites applications for grants totaling $50,000 in 2001-2002 to help teachers, curriculum developers, and others improve the quality of civics instruction, with priority on the role of Congress in our federal government. Areas of interest include designing lesson plans, creating student activities, and applying instructional technology in the classroom. Teachers (4th through 12th grades), community college faculty, and college and university faculty are eligible as are teacher-led student teams and individuals who develop curriculum. Priority will be given to the following disciplines: history, government, social studies, political science, and education.


World Space Week October 4-10, 2002

Declared in 1999 by the UN General Assembly , World Space Week marks the anniversary of two great milestones of humanity's expansion into space: 4 October 1957 -- Date of the launch into outer space of the first human-made Earth satellite, SPUTNIK I, thus opening the way for space exploration. 10 October 1967 -- Date of the entry into force of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies. The Benefits of World Space Week is it educates people around the world about the benefits they receive from space; Encourages greater use of space for sustainable economic development; Demonstrates public support for space programs; Excites children about learning and their future; Promotes institutions around the world that are involved in space and Fosters international cooperation in space outreach and education. Participate in World Space Week.
