The NASA Langley Research Center, Aerospace Vehicle Systems Technology Office, invites high school classrooms and/or student teams to submit their ideas for a practical flying car. The competition encourages all levels of high school students to engage in the process of submitting an entry. Inter-classroom teaming is encouraged, as is inter-school teaming. For example, a local school district may want to sponsor a team that represents the district science classes. A state junior academy of science may want to sponsor a team from among their student members. Traditional science fair competitions could be modified to use the flying car concept as a category. NASA and Arizona State University's Mars Education Program is offering students nationwide the opportunity to be involved in authentic Mars research by participating in the Mars Student Imaging Project (MSIP). Teams of students in the 5th through 12th grade will have the opportunity to work with scientists, mission planners and educators on the THEMIS team at ASU's Mars Space Flight Facility, to image a site on Mars using the THEMIS visible wavelength camera on board the Mars Odyssey spacecraft which is currently orbiting Mars every 2 hours. Toyota's Investment In Mathematics Excellence (TIME) is granting awards to teachers of up to $10,000 for innovative projects that enhance mathematics education within a school. This grant is sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales, USA., Inc through its partnership with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and its Mathematics Education Trust Board. Any K-12 classroom teacher with 3 years experience teaching mathematics within the United States is eligibly to apply for this award. The deadline for applications is January 8, 2003. The Dirksen Congressional Center invites applications for grants totaling $50,000 in 2001-2002 to help teachers, curriculum developers, and others improve the quality of civics instruction, with priority on the role of Congress in our federal government. Areas of interest include designing lesson plans, creating student activities, and applying instructional technology in the classroom. Teachers (4th through 12th grades), community college faculty, and college and university faculty are eligible as are teacher-led student teams and individuals who develop curriculum. Priority will be given to the following disciplines: history, government, social studies, political science, and education.
