NSTA Offers Two New Educator Awards

With the generous support of corporate sponsors, NSTA is now offering two new award programs for science educators, thanks to contributions from Delta Education, and Vernier Software and Technology. TOSA 2003 Professional Development

TOSA 2003 is a professional development opportunity providing teachers in grades 1-12 with hands-on opportunities in the environmental and business aspects of forest products companies. Participants attend seminars led by environmental education professionals who provide guidance in developing lesson plans for use in the classroom. Teachers receive a stipend of approximately $3000. Forty clock hours and/or 3 credits are available.Program Dates: June 30 - August 8, 2003. For more info, please visit the above web site.


JPL Open House

If you happen to be in the California area, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., will hold an open house on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., taking visitors on a virtual ride through the solar system with this year's theme, "Journey To The Planets and Beyond." This fun-filled, family event has a little of everything for space enthusiasts and non-space buffs, from virtual hang gliding lessons to a chance to build your own spacecraft and have your picture taken in infrared light. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet with scientists and engineers, who will staff booths to answer questions about current and future missions. For more info see the web site above.


BellSouth Grant opportunities

The BellSouth Foundation is currently accepting on-line concept papers for its 2003 Opportunity Grants program. These education grants are available for unsolicited proposals that might not fit within the parameters of a specific BellSouth Foundation initiative, but appear likely to add value to the foundation's work within one of four areas of priority: leadership, teacher quality, college-going minorities, and technology. Grants are awarded once a year, and requests should not exceed $75,000. Deadline to apply is May 23, 2003.
