Overview of project: High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) encourages Texas high school juniors to explore exciting career possibilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This is accomplished by using the centralized theme of space exploration to engage students in activities and offering hands-on engineering experiences at NASA Johnson Space Center.
Nominated by Texas state legislators, students complete competitive web-based lessons focusing on present and past space missions, International Space Station (ISS), the moon, Mars, and beyond. Top ranked students visit JSC at no cost for a six-day on-site summer experience to work on a team-oriented Mars exploration project with a Texas teacher, NASA engineer/scientist, and a NASA co-op/intern. Students may receive a science elective credit, approved by TEA, toward graduation upon successful completion of the project based upon their district .
