Clementine was launched in January, 1994. Its primary objective was to test lightweight imaging sensors developed by the Department of Defense. The spacecraft was sent to the Moon where it was placed in a polar orbit for two months to map for minerals. The images that Clementine took indicate that there is water at the south pole of this barren world.
